Self-Sanitize Travel Environment

Hello!   I am very excited today to share some tips about how to self-sanitize your travel environments.  Given the time we are living in where new viruses are popping up, it is important to be vigilant in public spaces. I will give you step by step instructions for sanitizing your cruise cabin.  These tips will help you in any travel situation from riding a public bus, taxi cab, and airplane or hotel room.

Step 1

First things first, you will need to bring your own supplies.   Some of these things you may already have around your house, if not, you can get them on line or at your local superstore.  These are the items you will need to put in your carry-on bag:

Lysol Disinfectant Spray (travel size)
Clorox Disinfectant Wipes
Gallon Size Zip Lock Bag (1 or 2)
Quart Size Zip Lock Bag (1 or 2)
Antibacterial Dish Soap
Clean Pillow Case

Lysol Disinfectant Spray and Clorox Disinfectant Wipes are your best bet for eliminating most germs.   Read labels to ensure you are getting the products that eliminate the germs of concern.  Pack all of the items in your carry-on bag.

Step 2

Wipe the door knob with a Clorox wipe before entering your room.  Wipe down the door jam and face of the door near the knob and repeat this step to wipe the inside of the door.   I like to wipe the midsection of the door in case I put my hands on the door.

Step 3

Once you have entered the space, place your luggage on the floor.  Do not put your babs on the bed.   This will keep little critters (bed bugs and such) that may have hitched a ride from the luggage holding areas to get in your bed.

Step 4

Remove the decorative coverings or top bedspread from your bed and place it in the closet.  These items are not necessary and are not always cleaned as regularly as the sheets.   Put your clean pillow case on the pillow that you plan to lay your head on.

Step 5

Wipe down all inside light switches and hard surfaces with Clorox wipes.

Step 6

In the bathroom, wipe down all hard surfaces, light switches and faucet handles with Clorox wipes.

Step 7

Gather all glasses or dishware from the room or bathroom and wash them with the antibacterial Dish Soap or put them in the closet where you will not be tempted to use them.

Step 8

Round up any remote controls and put each one in a zip lock bag.   The remote will work fine inside the bag and you will not have to worry about pesky germs that may be hiding in the small crevices.

Step 9

Spray the room with Lysol spray and leave the room for a few minutes to let the air settle.

Step 10

Resist the urge to hold or read any of the magazines or books that may be in the room.   Other fingers have been all over those and it is easier to forgo these things than to sanitize.  Especially if you are on an airplane.  Bring your own reading material.

I know this seems like an overwhelming task when you see it step by step but I can assure you that it only takes minutes.   I don’t pretend that this ritual will give you 100% protection but it will certainly give you peace of mind so that you can enjoy your trip.

We will include videos that will show you how you can make some of these products yourself in future blogs as well as patterns for making your own personal protection items.   Keep watching!
